TIME. It’s one thing we all need more of on a daily basis.
Or, how about the answer to this question:
“How do I find the TIME to do S’cool Moves, and how much TIME will it take for me to know if there is change in my students’ behavior or academics?”
This is a question I am asked frequently.
Enter Amy Spence, occupational therapist from Dayton, Ohio.
Amy’s research study provides some insights to help us answer the TIME question.
Dr. Spence's research results provided evidence-based data showing that doing S’cool Moves activities for 15 minutes per day for 3-4 days a week leads to improvement in on-task classroom behavior in six weeks.
Here are some highlights from her study.
Amy’s research question was, “Does a sensory and movement based intervention program improve the on-task classroom behaviors of at-risk students in an urban elementary school setting?”
Study Synopsis: Two Small groups of students received instruction from me for 15 minutes one time a week.The students were asked to do the learned activities 3-4 times throughout the week. It took them approximately 5-8 minutes to do themselves (including retrieving and putting away materials; doing posters and activities shown in small group). The Intervention lasted six weeks.
Study Outcomes: One class adhered to the 3-4 times a week; other class adhered to 2 times a week (once with Amy in a small group and when observed in class one time a week). Both classes made gains.
The one class that did the treatment more often had a higher average percentage difference in percentile changes in both on-task behavior and weekly classroom assignments.
Post-Implementation: Both groups wanted to continue using the posters and activities. One teacher expanded it to include the entire classroom; the other group, who did the posters daily, continued to do the posters the rest of the year under the teacher's guidance. A few other students in the class wanted to do the tasks also.
This school year, one teacher continues to implement with the entire class. Amy does ten minutes of instruction, and the teacher carries out the rest of the week and adds some of her 'style' into the movement and calming activities. Students in the other class are doing posters in the hallway again with the new teacher supporting them.

This an excellent example of how collaboration between support staff and general education created a way to reach goals that neither were able to reach independently. As we fill the gap in research between clinical practice and classroom practice, projects like Dr. Spence's are a great way to add to our body of knowledge.
